How to Get Rid of Bikini Razor Bumps

Razor bumps in the bikini area can be unsightly and embarrassing, especially during the summer months when you're wearing a bathing suit. Razor bumps occur after depilation, when the hair curls back into the skin and creates red, inflamed areas known as psuedofolliculitis pubis. Many different treatments are available for effectively treating and preventing razor bumps that will have you back in shape for swimsuit season and beyond.

Step 1

Change your shaving habits. Stop shaving to reduce the risk of further irritating the razor bumps. If you need to shave your pubic region, dampen the hair with a warm washcloth to soften the hair before shaving. In addition, soaking in a warm bath or taking a shower will help soften the hair.

Step 2

Use a thin coat of hydrocortisone cream on the skin area affected by razor bumps after you shave. Hydrocortisone helps to reduce redness and irritation by constricting the blood vessels and lessening the blood flow, according to Dr. Evelyn Placek, an internal medicine doctor and dermatologist in New York.

Step 3

Apply an exfoliant and moisturizer, such as glycolic acid, which is available over the counter. Glycolic acid is in various cosmetic products and removes the old surface skin cells. DermNet NZ recommends applying the lotion in the evening to the affected areas to reduce the potential of new inflamed spots from forming.

Step 4

Apply a layer of aloe vera gel to the razor bumps. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, aloe contains agents that may lessen pain and inflammation, aid in the growth and repair of skin, and is an effective moisturizer. Because of these properties, aloe vera gel is a popular treatment for relieving minor burns and skin irritations.

Step 5

Apply a topical acne treatment or shaving cream containing benzoyl peroxide. Placek suggests using benzoyl peroxide as a long-term preventive treatment every time you shave to minimize the occurrence of razor bumps.

Step 6

Dip a cotton ball in witch hazel and apply the astringent to the razor bumps. Witch hazel contains tannins, which promote healing skin inflammation, according to the Drugs.com website.

Step 7

Use tea tree oil by applying a small amount to the razor bumps. Tea tree oil is a natural astringent, similar to witch hazel and lavender oil, and can help to alleviate skin irritated from shaving.
